NORDANCE

FESTIVAL OF NORDIC YOUTH CULTURES

NORDANCE (5-12 AUGUST 2019)

Dear friends! Nordance festival is growing and this year it became a part of a larger project aimed at promoting Nordic countries in Russia — NORDIC FLOW. That means that the festival widened its geography and now set a goal of increasing mobility among young people residing
and working in the Nordics as as well those interested in the Nordic cultures. Last year we tested our idea as a part of a large urban fest Faces & Laces and came to realisation that we did pretty good job in telling Moscow what young people can learn and do in the Nordic countries. This year we really tested our partnership and made it possible for dozens of young people to travel, share their experience and learn from each other. Many of these young people travelled for the fist time and tested their English skills in a  vibrant international environment.

What have we done this year? Well, we have not only organised a three-day festival, but we also run a boot camp in Kaluga (not far away from Moscow) where young people in the age of 18-25 took dance  and street art classes, jammed together, learnt lots of cool stuff about Kaluga city and region, discussed differences and similarities of Sweden, Norway, Finland and Russia as well bild friendships across borders. Our mission was to create an infrastructure for learning and dialoge and let the young people to use it they way they find the best suitable for their needs. As a result, some of the residents of the camp signed up for English classes straight after they came back home and some of them travelled to Finland a month after the event to see their new friends and support their youth culture activities back home.

On a more professional front we managed to create a new network of people who work with youth in the respective countries ans set up new goals of collaboration and cooperation. For example,  we came to the conclusion that it is important for the youth and street culture leaders to organise themselves institutionally to manage to stand up for their interests and speak for themselves when it come to the future of youth cultures.

When it comes to the festival programme in Moscow, we decided to focus on breaking and sketching in order to consolidate the group of dancers and to show what the Nordics can do and what they can learn from the experiences of Russian cultural producers and artists.
